Peloponnesian War - 431 - 404 BCE - A war between the
Spartan and Athenian poleis which probably stemmed from Spartan fear
of Athens, or Athenian imperialism. The Spartans finally defeated
the Athenian fleet in 405 BCE. Shortly thereafter the Athenian
