Council of Trent - 1542 - In response to the many religious
reforms, Pope Paul III called for a ``general council of
Christendom'' to meet and resolve some of the issues between the
various religious reformers and traditional church doctrinists. Between
1545 - 1563, a group of church officials and theologians met
at Trent to consider the issues, however they were unable to build
consensus. Despite fervent disagreements, the Council of Trent
reconfirmed quintessential church doctrine and practice, including
practices such as indulgences that had been criticized by religious
reformers. Though the goal of the Council of Trent might have been
to bring unity to the church after many disagreements. The gulf
between religious movements may have been irreconcilable, since the
Council urged dogmatic adherence to traditional views. The
principals adopted by the Council served only to solidify the
differences and to further ensure that the church would remain
divided on these issues.
